A Walk Along the Rio Grande
A Walk Along the Rio Grande.
I took a walk along the Rio Grande near Wayne's House. It is a flat area with a profusion of low growing cottonwoods. There are some horse trails that meander along the banks of the river and I followed them for about a mile or two. I just wandered, and made my way out onto the river bed occasionally. Even at its most narrow points the river was never very deep. More of a large stream than a river really, but even this much flowing water is considered remarkable at this time of year. It was cold and windy, but not unpleasant. I saw traces of beavers. I spotted a Jack Rabbit, lots of doves, and a red tailed hawk. I ran across a pile of feathers where the hawk had caught a dove. Poor dove has to be more feathers than meat, given the broad area of white fluff.
Wandering down the horse trails along the river I occasionally felt a part of the long past traffic that moved up and down the river as it made its way north and south toward Messila, the old town to the south of Las Cruces.
