Haleiwa East, and West
This weeks direves were from Haleiwa to Kahuku return (28 miles), on Friday March 15, and then, on Saturday march 16, we intended to go out toward the end of Farrington highway near Kaena point, (22 miles).
Friday was an incredibly beautiful morning and the run along the beaches of the North shore was stunningly nice. Both Rex and I kept telling each other how nice the day was. The traffic was pretty heavy at times but not as bad as the Kaneohe run. Nothing like a big truck or a tourist bus a small road to keep you awake.

We stopped at the beaches and took a few shots, moved on. Even with the stops we were moving fast and averaging 16+ minute miles. On the way out we ran into Ben Williams, my housemate from Manoa Road. It was great to see Ben out there. I've actually run into him a number of times in the last year. Which says a lot for how much road time both he and I have been putting in. Ben a bit more than me, and being on a bike he covers much more ground.
I regaled Rex with stories of Lt. Hergerst of the Daedalus and the incident at Waimea, as we passed through the bay. Rex has been up to the heiau so he understood that part. The Lt., his science officer and a few crew rowed ashore to get water at Waimea. They were warned off by locals who cautioned the party about some lawless Pahupu living up at the heiau. They were ignored, and when the men came down from the heiau they managed to lure the party back into the river on promises of sweeter water. When they had them far enough back they killed them for their weapons. Later Vancouver insisted that Kahekili produce the guilty. Kamohomoho was made responsible for the situation and produced the 'guilty' parties, who Vancouver insisted be executed.
We hit Kahuku feeling pretty good after about four plus hours and just over 14 miles. We took the turn and headed back. The weather to the west was threatening, but the rain never seemed to come after us. The way back was a bit of a push. It was highlighted by meeting Heather. She looked so good, and was so much fun to talk to that I forgot to get a picture. Which was a real bummer as it was the intervention of the the direve, so said Rex.
We made it back in 8:40, which wasn't bad as I had some gut problems about an hour out of Kahuku that delayed us for a bit.
On Saturday we had intended to do the trip out to the end of Farrington highway. Its a boring and dangerous run. So on the way out we went by way of Waialua, Crozier Road to cut traffic exposure and then as we took the turn, we decided to forgo the long run out along the road and do a Long Road crossover and down, coming back the road. The distance would be greater or equal and we figured it less of a traffic hassle.
We ran into Mike and Trish on the bottom portion of Long Road just above the 1 mile marker. Larry came by and we wished him all the best on his Hard Rock attempt. He was obviously beat and headed on down. Mike mentioned a new cross-over trail to the eastern ridge trail. We decided to take it as we went by it.
The lower section is quite nice after one gets through the tall grass at the bottom and runs across the bottom of ACTIVE pasture land. The cows are around. We found old walls, an old house site, and lots of other indications of past use up there. It is actually quite broad along the the low hill that we moved around. Very pretty area, particularly since it was so green, which is not that common out that way.
The trail was marked for much of the way, but then as we hit the ridge it became sporadic and then disappeared. We clung to the ridge line for about an hour before we finally found a real trail and then the Wooden Gate. After that it was a hard but easily follow-able trial up to Peacock Flats camp ground.
