Leward side Derive (dereeve)
The second section of Rex's sectional 'round the island' derive. We try and approach these ventures as 'modern day flauneurs, hiker/experiencers seeking experience and understanding and revelation through external interventions and moments of serendipity. We attempt to understand and experience the 'stickiness and bury nature of time' that one encounters in walks across the land. It is walking as performance art, blending the meaning of art with the meaning of life-experience.
These are time-on-feet workouts to get ourselves in shape for the full 'round the island' in late April. Rex draws on the experience to create a short piece of performance art which he stages at school.
Kahe Point power plant to Yokohama beach. Start 7:00 AM, Turn at 12:30 PM and finish at 5:45. Fast walk. Two stops for food and water, a few short stops to adjust gear. Walked makai side of road and utilized beach side roads and trails. Followed track when they were present. Windy day but Hot and Sunny. Waves were breaking about 4 to 5 on glassy surfaces with some wind blow in the afternoon. Buffalo Kealoha was being held at Makaha. We caught the beginning and it was over by the time we got back.
I have done this side on three round the island solos, but each was at night and the efforts were dismal, depressing ventures. Sunlight opened up the beaches and gave vista's of the mountains. It was incredible. Very nice and I have revised my feelings of the leeward side. Gone were were the gray chain linked lined roads, the prison yard lighting, and the dark shabbiness. The blue of the Ocean, the sudden vista's of the lava rock pu'u, the long clear visions of the distant Leeward range, all lent to an open airy feeling.
People were all friendly-as opposed to the spacey tweakers and churned up methers of the night. Of course we were moving and just saying 'howzits'. But we got a lot of 'good mornings.' And later people saw us and then when they saw us again they waved or said something and gave us some encouragement. Three or four cars and trucks stopped and offered us a ride. Very nice.
It was a hard walk along the beaches and on hard road. Traffic was difficult but not threatening, and we found ways to stay off the main road for a large part of the the walk.
I'm toast.
