Don and I do Makapu'u Repeats

Well this was not a run more than a long walk, but for Don it marked the beginning of a long awaited comeback. It was nice to get out there with him and march up the hill to the Makapu'u light and stand there on the lookout, watching the colors of the sea change, and just talk in that relaxed kind of way that runners do when they take a bit of a break.

For Don it marked the first time he had gone out running without Neo, his port, embedded in his chest for a long time. He brought Neo along so I could take a look at it. A blue plastic kind of valve about the size of a pacemaker. The nastiest part of Neo was that he connected to a tube that was inserted in his carotid artery. That always had Don just a bit on edge about moving fast...Hell to pay if you fell with that little thingy squirling around in the artery that supplies your brain.

We walked and talked about running, the unpleasant side effects of the last chemo session, the goals for the next few months. This Wednesday morning run has been a tradition for years now. It was nice to enjoy it once again.

We did two loops up and down. Walking by the tourists and hikers at our brisk pace. The breezes were light, the ocean was beautiful, the recent rains had greened up the hillsides a bit. Makapu'u is a nice little workout if you make it fast, and a pleasant walk if you just want to talk and loosen up. We choose the latter today.
